Renewable Energy for the Future

Featured Projects

2015 - HMT Manufacturing Inc, North Chicago, Illinois

HMT ManufacturingHMT Manufacturing in North Chicago selected Halus Power Systems to supply a 225 kW wind turbine to increase its energy independence. The turbine includes a cold weather heating system and remote monitoring for the turbine controller. The addition of the wind turbine will supplement the company’s two-year-old roof-mounted solar power system and will allow HMT to generate all the electricity it needs for its manufacturing business. HMT is a hot melt adhesive film and panel laminating equipment manufacturer. The company’s forward thinking President Burton Bucher wanted his business to be energy independent and do so using clean energy and now it is. Project management and installation were jointly handled by Halus and HMT.

2014 - Seadrift Water Treatment Plant, Texas

City of SeadriftThis project was a turnkey supply and installation of a 100 kW wind turbine for the City of Seadrift Water Treatment Plant. The contract award included project-related work such as electrical, foundation, and installation, in addition to turbine supply. The project was funded through a grant under the 2012 Renewable Energy Demonstration Pilot Program (REDPP). This was the second turbine to be installed on the Water Treatment Plant property; the first turbine was installed at the end of 2011. The turbine was interconnected with the local utility company, American Electric Power (AEP). The turbine was equipped with a remote monitoring and control system. Electricity produced by the turbine offsets electricity used by water pumps to circulate water to City residents.

2012 - Survival Condos, Concordia, Kansas

Survival CondosA 90 kW Halus wind turbine is helping to power a very unique luxury survival condo development in Concordia, Kansas. The underground luxury survival condos were constructed inside a former Atlas missile silo. The inner infrastructure of the missile silo has been removed, and replaced with luxury residential condominiums and other amenities to provide extended living during natural disasters and other catastrophic events. The development is 15 stories and descends to an underground depth of approximately 200 feet. The turbine has been outfitted with a cold weather heating system, new control system, and network connectivity.

2011 - Case Western Reserve University, Ohio

Case Western ReserveHalus supplied a remanufactured 225 kW wind turbine to Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, OH. The turbine was installed at a nearby off-campus industrial location in Euclid, OH, as part of the Ohio Wind Energy Research and Commercialization (WERC) Center. The WERC Center is a $3 million project which also includes a Northwind 100 and a Nordex N-54. In addition to fulfilling the WERC's research mission to develop wind power supply chain products and provide long-term educational and training opportunities, the turbines also provide power to nearby buildings. The 225 kW turbine features a variable pitch system for optimal efficiency and remote monitoring. Halus was the turbine supplier for this project.

2011 - Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, Berea, Ohio

Cuyahoga County FairgroundsCuyahoga County awarded Halus a contract for design, build, and supply of a 500 kW wind turbine which was installed at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. The turbine is connected to the local utility company First Energy with electricity production from the turbine offsetting most of the electricity used by the Fairgrounds. The project received funding from both the State of Ohio and the Department of Energy. In addition to the turbine, an interactive renewable energy learning center was also built to allow visitors to learn about the wind turbine. Halus also supplied a small turbine demonstration unit housed inside the learning center and wind turbine blades used for a long public bench outside the center.

2010 - Edgewood Water Plant, New Mexico

Edgewood Wastewater TreatmentHalus supplied a remanufactured 100 kW wind turbine to the Town of Edgewood, NM. The turbine was installed on the site of the town’s wastewater treatment plant and net-metered to offset the high electricity use of the treatment plant. The turbine features some custom options designed and built by Halus that were not part of the original equipment such as a relay protection system to meet the requirements of the utility interconnection, a cold weather heating package for monitoring and control of temperatures with network connectivity and a web-enabled remote monitoring and control system for all turbine functions.

2009 - Winterhof Farms, Aurelia, Iowa

Winterhof FarmsHalus supplied two wind turbines to family-owned Winterhof livestock farm in Iowa. The Winterhof family have been supplying a Sara Lee processing facility in nearby Storm Lake with turkeys raised on their Aurelia farm for many years. The farm has the capacity to raise more than 100,000 birds at a time and raises over 300,000 turkeys annually. The turbines offset most of the energy use of the roughly 10 acres worth of buildings housing the turkeys. This is the first Iowa Turkey Federation facility to be powered with on-site wind turbines and earned Russ and Beth Winterhof a Governor’s Iowa Environmental Excellence Award in 2010.

2007 - Rio Viento RV Park, Sherman Island, California

Rio VientoHalus is particularly proud of this project as the installation just celebrated its ten year anniversary. The turbine has worked continuously since day one of being turned on back in 2007, with availability over the last decade over 99%. Located approximately 50 miles east of San Francisco, the resort is a popular Bay Area windsurfing destination and also frequented by visitors of the Delta, where the Sacramento River meets the Bay. The turbine produces a significant portion of the electricity used by the facility and has long since paid for itself (approximately in 2011). The turbine is expected to last at least 15 more years. As local utility electricity rates have increased, the value of the turbine is ever-increasing.
